Author Matt de la Pena Visits Mahtomedi School District

On April 17, 2019, Matt de la Peña, award-winning author will visit Wildwood Elementary School at 9:45-10:30 and 10:45-11:30 as well as O.H. Anderson Elementary School from 12:45-1:45 pm and 2-3 pm. Matt de la Peña will describe his personal journey from reluctant reader to author noting that he didn’t actually “fall for books until he was in college” which he attended on a full basketball scholarship. The focus of the presentation however is on the picture books themselves. He reads the books (while showing the images) and tells the audience secret things about the stories and discusses recurring themes like wonder, gratitude, love, and hope and how proud he is to come from a working class background.

Matt de la Peña is an author of young adult novels and picture books.

Matt de la Peña earned a Master in Fine Arts in creative writing from San Diego State University and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of the Pacific. He lives in Brooklyn, New York. He previously served as a faculty member in the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing for Children and Young Adults program at Hamline University in Minnesota.

This visit is made possible by a MAFE grant awarded to Jean Oswald and Michlyn Newman and the Mahtomedi PTO.
